The As-1 Cross Plate Shear Tester is an instrument used to measure the natural shear strength of saturated soft clay on site. Insert a cross shaped plate head of a specified shape and size into soft clay at a depth in the borehole, apply a torsional moment, shear and destroy the soil, measure the maximum torque that the soil can resist torsional damage, and obtain the undrained shear strength Cu value of the soil through conversion based on the torque balance condition (assuming φ=0).
