The depth of road surface structure is an indicator of road roughness. In the past, manual sanding method was used to determine the depth in China. Although this method is simple, the human error is too large, and there is a lack of practical operating standards. This situation can no longer meet the testing needs of China's road departments. Since the Ninth Five Year Plan, China's high-grade highways have entered a key construction stage. The Ministry of Transport's "On site Testing Regulations for Highway Roadbeds and Pavements" stipulate the testing content and promote the use of electric sand paving equipment to meet the needs of quality standard testing methods for high-grade highway pavement engineering.

This instrument is a new product jointly developed by our company and the Highway Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport. Based on the Japanese electric roughness tester introduced by the Ministry of Transport, our company has improved the instrument according to the actual situation in China and produced the first domestically produced prototype. The prototype was tested and verified by relevant units of the Ministry of Transport's highway organization and compared with the Japanese electric roughness tester and manual sanding method under the same conditions. The results show that our company's electric sanding tester is easy to operate, convenient to use, avoids human error, and is an ideal testing instrument for detecting and evaluating the macroscopic roughness and anti-skid ability of road surfaces.

1. The capacity of the sand funnel is about 70mL. The width of the opening under the sand funnel is about 2.7mm. The size of the sand belt is about 50mm wide and 4mm thick.
